Skygard and Hafslund Celsio ensure efficient use of surplus heat from the data center

Skygard has entered into a strategic partnership with Hafslund Celsio to ensure efficient energy recovery and help reduce the climate footprint of data center operations in Oslo.
This collaboration means that the surplus heat from Skygard's first data center in Hovinbyen will be used in Hafslund Celsio's district heating network. In this way, the energy from the data center will be used to heat both commercial and residential buildings in the area, supporting Oslo and Norway's goals for emission reductions and sustainable energy use. As many as 12,000 Oslo apartments will be able to be heated with surplus heat from the data center.Skygard has set itself high environmental goals, with the ambition of becoming a role model for green data centers in the Nordic region. Based on a comprehensive materiality analysis, the project has identified ten priority ESG areas that will guide the development of the data center. In particular, Skygard prioritizes energy efficiency, water-saving measures and optimal utilization of excess heat.According to Elise Lindeberg, CEO of Skygard, the collaboration with Hafslund Celsio is an important part of the company's sustainability strategy.- Our partnership with Hafslund Celsio ensures that our data center not only meets high security and energy efficiency standards, but also contributes to society by supplying the local area with environmentally friendly heat. This is a step towards realizing our ambition to be a leader in green data center operations.

Martin S. Lundby

CEO in Hafslund Celsio
Through our collaboration with Skygard, we can deliver more district heating to Oslo produced with local surplus energy that would otherwise be lost.
The collaboration is also based on the principles of circularity and recycling, where Skygard focuses on keeping energy, water and materials in closed circuits to minimize the use of resources. By facilitating the recovery of surplus heat and further connection to Hafslund Celsio's district heating network, Skygard contributes to more efficient use of energy throughout Oslo.Martin S. Lundby, CEO of Hafslund Celsio, sees the collaboration with Skygard as an important contribution to the local district heating system and Oslo's climate goals.─ Through our collaboration with Skygard, we can deliver more district heating to Oslo produced with local surplus energy that would otherwise be lost. The collaboration reduces the need for more power grids and new energy production. This is a good example of how actors can join forces to use the energy that is already in our city and at the same time contribute to realizing the EU's and Norway's climate goals," he says.- This collaboration highlights how the interaction between technology, sustainable energy sources and circularity principles can create solutions that both meet society's digital infrastructure needs and contribute to a greener society," concludes Lindeberg.
